Appearance: As Syrran is a Goureg and a fairly large one too, his skin has an overall slate gray color with his chest, neck, beak, inside of the ears and fingertips following the common color pattern. He lacks the lighter underbelly though which is roughly the same shade of gray as the base color. His back, from the area around the base of his tail along his spinal cord up to the back of the neck is noticeably darker in shade, gradually shifting to the average slate gray toward the broad shoulders and sides. The toes are the shade of charcoal and quite large, with sharp claws at the ends, doing an excellent job at balancing his large muscular body. The eyes are a shade of bright bluish-green, a common color for his race.

Being a Goureg, Syrran’s appearance is tall and rather hulking. His legs are fairly long and muscular and this muscularity is continued throughout the rest of the body, in particular the broad chest, large square shoulders and thickly built arms. His Imperial Guard training made sure to add to his already impressive natural strength and endurance. His tail is thick, very muscular and a little shorter than average for his race, reaching till just below his ankles in its relaxed state. His large feet can easily compensate for the shorter length of the tail though. Syrran’s ears are fairly long for his race but pointy and with smaller lobes. Syrran wears two very detailed tattoos. Located on his outer upper arm are two Sogowa-native flowers with the stems crossed, colored in rose gold and a piece of writing in his native language over this picture depicting the name of his mate, Khiné. The other one is the crest of the House of Xar in a combination of solid black and blood-red on his right chest.

Personality: Although Syrran might not look like the kindest person from the outside, his outer appearance and the somewhat cranky natural expression on his face is misleading. His deep voice has a bit of a rough and grunting tone to it but it doesn’t sound unfriendly by any means, unless ticked off. He can be kind and understanding. In fact, he cares very much about his mate and those dear to him but not many have managed to enter his circle of friends.

Syrran’s other side is feared by those who have witnessed him in this state. It doesn’t happen that often but when he gets angry, he gets angry very quickly and violently. His aggressive temper will get the better of him when that happens and it wouldn’t be the first time he injures himself or others in a tantrum. Because of this he has caught himself in trouble before after assaulting a superior officer in a moment of sudden rage. A court-martial was the result and only because of being temporarily held unaccountable for his actions he managed to keep his current rank and save his honor, under the condition that he would serve for at least five more years in the Imperial Guard. Of course to save his personal honor and prevent bringing shame upon his family name with being expelled from the House of Xar as a possible result, he accepted.

Despite these shortcomings and beyond what one would expect, Syrran is very intelligent with a very bright mind, hampered only by his temper. He has a natural talent for math, understanding coordinate systems, reading star charts and thus being able to navigate a starship with ease. These skills made him somewhat of an exception within the borders of his family as the House of Xar has known many exceptional warriors who served among the Emperor’s frontline troops as pure soldiers.

Background: Syrran grew up on Sogowa as a son of the House of Xar, a family name known and respected for its warriors. Their family culture bears strong signs of this profession and it was a family custom to follow in one’s ancestors' footsteps. Therefore, Syrran was raised in a manner that prepared him for the field of battle. His father was one of the most highly revered members of his family, having completed numerous dangerous missions as a commando of the SpecOps unit Tezzar 5. Syrran knows his father rather would’ve wanted him to follow in his footsteps but still he was surprised when his decision to join the Imperial Guard was respected and not rejected.

His hidden talents surfaced during his years in the Academy where he gained a major advantage in all subjects that required the power of the brain instead of the muscles, though there are certainly no shortcomings in that last regard either. His ability to solve problems and his resourcefulness quickly got him his first position aboard a science vessel, at the conn next to the pilot of course. It was the first time he could put his knowledge and thinking to the test, until that moment when he lost control of his temper and was forced to transfer to a different ship under a different commanding officer.

It was an unfortunate incident but it also forced him to part from the girl he loved. Khiné had quickly become a close friend from the moment they met, he on his first commission as navigator, she as a science officer and astrometrics specialist. Of course these skills caused them to work together on a number of occasions. It was only a matter of time before a much stronger bond began to develop between them. The tattoo on his arm is a token of their bond and love and despite the distance that now separates them it cannot be broken.

You bet he is a tough guy.

Next to the pilot a starship needs a navigator and that's exactly what Syrran is.

And he'll be for one half of the shifts.
